State - Former schools worker sentenced in fraud case

DETROIT (AP) -- A former Detroit Public Schools employee who pleaded guilty to conspiring to defraud the district of nearly $380,000 has been sentenced to 24 months in prison. U.S. Attorney Barbara McQuade said in a release last Thursday that 46-year-old Toni Gilbert of Detroit also was ordered to pay more than $672,000 in restitution. Federal authorities said Gilbert had worked as a payroll manager and issued checks to 56-year-old Anton Carter of Detroit between 2000 and 2005. Carter, a DPS retiree, also was receiving disability checks from the district. Carter gave Gilbert a portion of the money. Gilbert also acknowledged issuing paychecks to deceased district employees. Carter was sentenced in August to six months in prison and ordered to pay more than $378,000 in restitution. Published: Mon, Sep 13, 2010
