DETROIT (AP) -- A judge has quickly appointed standby counsel for a Nigerian man accused of trying to blow up an international flight on Christmas.
Anthony Chambers was chosen Tuesday to help Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab represent himself in federal court in Detroit.
Abdulmutallab is charged with attempting to blow up Northwest Airlines Flight 253 from Amsterdam to Detroit with 278 passengers and 11 crew members aboard. Authorities say he tried to set off explosives hidden in his underwear.
At his request, his four-member defense team was dismissed Monday. Abdulmutallab insists on representing himself.
Chambers can advise Abdulmutallab but can't serve as his full-fledged lawyer during court hearings.
