'A Jury of One's Peers' focus of discussion hosted by Wolverine Bar

The Wolverine Bar Association (WBA) will conduct a roundtable discussion on "A Jury of One's Peers: Fact or Legal Fiction?" on Tuesday, Oct. 12, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Detroit offices of Bodman LLP.
Empanelling a jury that is racially diverse is often an elusive goal. Contributing factors include the underrepresentation of particular groups from the public records on which the source lists are based, geographic obstacles that prevent summonses from being delivered to individuals of particular demographics, and a disproportionally high rate of disqualifying characteristics found among low income individuals and racial minorities. How extensive are these problems in the state and federal legal system? How can attorneys challenge the composition of a jury pool? What can lawyers do to educate the public on the importance of jury duty, and eradicate procedures that systematically exclude racial minorities?
Join the WBA and its distinguished panelists for a roundtable discussion on these issues. Featured panelists include U.S. District Court Judge Denise Page Hood, Eastern District of Michigan; Michael K. Lee, National Urban League Board of Trustees; Greg Conyers, State Bar of Michigan; and Heaster Wheeler, executive director, NAACP.
Bodman LLP is located on the 5th Floor at Ford Field, 1901 St. Antoine Street. Enter at Gate G or use second floor connecting bridge. Refreshments will be served during the discussion. For additional information, contact David Perkins at (313) 283-1117 or Michael Carter at (313) 903-7749.
