Advocates push for more autism coverage in Mich.
LANSING (AP) -- Supporters of expanded health insurance coverage for autism are hoping to get changes approved in Michigan by the end of the year.
A public hearing on insurance coverage for autism was held Tuesday in Lansing. It's the last in a series statewide.
Supporters want legislation to require insurance coverage for certain intensive behavioral therapies for children with autism. Nearly half of the states in the nation have such a requirement.
Bills have passed the Democratic-run House but have not advanced in the Republican-led Senate.
Opponents of the bills worry about the cost of mandating expensive treatments, while others say autism shouldn't be singled out for attention when other disorders deserve equal insurance coverage.
