Oakland County has launched Property Gateway, a free and fee-based web application that allows users to obtain public information about parcels of land via a map-based web application.
Located on the Access Oakland web portal, Property Gateway will enable those seeking details about residential, commercial or industrial lots to interact with a map to obtain property characteristics, present and historical tax information, and sales transactions. It combines records from the county, cities, villages and townships with Geographic Information System (GIS) software.
"Property Gateway uses Web 2.0 technology to make public data more accessible and transparent," said Deputy County Executive and CIO Phil Bertolini. "It takes our Access Oakland application to the next level."
Among the innovations of Property Gateway is that users will be able to access basic property characteristics for free in a thumbnail format to ensure they've selected the correct parcel before purchasing a detailed report. Property information is available to individuals on a per transaction basis. Qualified businesses may set up an account.
"Oakland County prides itself on using leading edge technology in order to make government more transparent and save taxpayers money," said Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson.
Oakland County's Department of Information Technology (IT) created Access Oakland in the 1990s to provide real estate professionals, government employees and the public access to property records. IT developed Property Gateway in order to improve the versatility and accessibility of Access Oakland to meet the needs of today's tech-savvy user.
