Federal court names Laurie J. Michelson as magistrate judge
U.S. District Court Chief Judge Gerald E. Rosen, Eastern District of Michigan, announced last week that the court has selected Laurie J. Michelson for appointment as United States magistrate judge. Michelson is a resident of West Bloomfield. She obtained her undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan and her law degree from Northwestern University School of Law. She currently works at the law firm of Butzel Long in Detroit.
Michelson was one of five persons nominated by a court-appointed Merit Selection Panel from among 107 applicants. The panel was chaired by attorney Richard M. Helfrick. Other panel members included attorneys Stephanie D. Davis, Matthew F. Leitman, Michael L. Pitt and I.W. Winsten, as well as non-attorneys B.N. Bahadur, Williams F. Jones, Jr., Kathleen Straus and Iris Taylor.
Michelson's name will be forwarded to the Administrative Office of the United States Courts in Washington, D.C. which will initiate the required background investigations by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Internal Revenue Service. Upon the successful completion of those investigations, Michelson will be sworn in as a magistrate judge in Detroit.
Michelson would fill the magistrate judge vacancy created by the retirement of Magistrate Judge Donald A. Scheer.
