Patterson invites school, municipal officials to budget symposium, Nov. 8

Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson is encouraging local municipal and school officials to attend the Oakland County Budget Symposium II where they will hear the latest government revenue forecasts and learn about long-term financial planning tools and innovative cost saving techniques.
The event, co-hosted by Oakland Schools, will be held from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 8, at the Oakland Schools building, 2111 Pontiac Lake Road in Waterford. Registration begins at 8 a.m.
"Oakland County, together with Oakland Schools, is making this opportunity available in consideration of the continued looming financial challenges facing all of us in local government and education," said Patterson. "Our goal is to encourage our colleagues to engage in long-term financial plans to ensure sustainable and viable services for our residents."
The format of this year's budget symposium will build upon and supplement the first symposium held by Oakland County last December. There will be individualized breakout sessions designed for various levels of expertise.
Among the sessions will be current and future economic and budgetary issues facing public officials; how to use technology to change the business process of government; fostering collaboration in school services; reducing energy costs by going green; and how to save money through cooperative contracts.
Municipal and school officials from within and outside Oakland County are welcome to register for the Oakland County Budget Symposium II by going to www.oakgov.com/exec. The event is free.
Approximately 250 public officials from as far away as western Michigan attended Oakland County's first budget symposium December 7, 2009.
