State Police receives $5.8 million in federal dollars to fund 21 trooper jobs

Col. Eddie L. Washington, Jr. has announced that the Michigan State Police (MSP) has been awarded a $5.8 million federal grant to fund 21 trooper jobs from the U.S. Department of Justice Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Hiring Program.
''This federal grant is great news for Michigan,'' said Governor Jennifer M. Granholm. ''It will help us further protect Michigan citizens by placing more troopers in our communities statewide.''
The grant provides 100 percent of the approved salary and benefits for entry-level officer positions over a three-year period.
The MSP is required to retain the grant-funded positions for a fourth year.
''Being chosen by the federal government to receive this grant award underscores our commitment to public safety and the vital role the Michigan State Police plays in ensuring safety and security in Michigan,'' Washington said.
''This funding puts 21 more troopers on the streets to work alongside our local partners, bolstering law enforcement in communities across the state.''
The goal of the COPS Hiring Program is to help law enforcement agencies add and retain the manpower needed to fight crime more effectively through community policing.
With this funding, the MSP will place troopers around the state serving citizens in a variety of ways such as mentoring youth, working with senior citizens and focusing on community service and training.
The MSP received the largest grant award in Michigan and was one of only 379 agencies to receive a federal award out of more than 4,400 applicants nationwide.
The MSP application was ranked in the top 10 percentile overall by the COPS competitive grant scoring formula.
