Local dentist offers cash for Halloween treats; to send candy to troops

By Frank Weir Legal News Local dentist Amin Jaffer is replacing the sugar in trick-or-treat bags with cash AND helping troops overseas. This Halloween, trick-or- treaters can bring their excess candy to Arbor Dental, 2301 Platt Road, Suite 200, 48104 in Ann Arbor and receive $1.00 per pound. Candy will be collected at Arbor Dental on the Saturday after Halloween, Nov. 6 only, from noon to 3 p.m. Candy must be unopened. The collected candy will be mailed to troops overseas as part of Operation Gratitude located in Van Nuys, Calif., Dr. Jaffer noted. "Ditch the candy, that's what we're saying. Visiting your dentist twice a year and brushing daily are great preventatives but doing away with excess sweets really gives your teeth a healthy boost. "Kids can still have all of the fun of trick-or-treating and now their piggy banks will benefit too." Jaffer added that global sugar consumption for children increases by about two percent annually and currently equals 50 millions tons per year. "Candy affects children's teeth and can lead to hyperactivity and weight gain too," he said. "In some cases, the wrong types of candy also can lead to broken teeth and damaged braces."
