Commissioner fights for local entrepreneur

Last week Oakland County Commissioner Tim Burns (D- Clawson) introduced a plan to help a local Troy resident, and others like her, start a business in Oakland County.
More than six months ago, Mary Storm, Troy resident, approached the county with her interest of operating a hot dog stand outside the county courthouse. She attended the Board of Commissioners meeting earlier this month to ask for help in her pursuit of starting her business and getting off unemployment.
"I've been unemployed. I want to work. I've looked for work. At some point I told myself, if I was going to work, I was going to have to create my own job. That's when I came up with an idea to start my food cart business," Mary Storm said explaining why she wants to start this business. "I'm thankful Commissioner Burns is taking steps to help a resident start a business in Oakland County."
Burns, a lawyer, has seen similar businesses in front of other courthouses in Macomb and Wayne Counties when he has been there on other business. "Mary took initiative with this idea, has taken the efforts to be a qualified vendor for this service, and the idea seems to work in most places," Burns said.
Burns introduced a new resolution to address the problem. The proposal has already received bipartisan support.
Burns' Proposal:
1) Request Oakland County administration to submit a proposal for establishing stationary outdoor sites on the Oakland County campus for mobile food carts.
2) Request the proposal be submitted within 90 days.
3) Develop a Request for Proposals, and solicit competitive bids for mobile food cart vendors that will be permitted to operate on identified outdoor sites on the Oakland County campus.
4) Award contract and review the effort within 12 months.
"We need to be encouraging entrepreneurs like Mary Storm to start new businesses, and the county needs to be a partner in this effort," said Burns. "Helping small business people create jobs, one job at a time is a strategy to turn our economy around."
Burns' resolution was referred to the Board's Finance Committee for further consideration.
