EAST LANSING (AP) -- Michigan State University and Sparrow Hospital are working together on a $443,000 federal project to improve the training of medical examiners in the U.S.
A grant from the National Institute of Justice is underwriting the project.
Sparrow pathology director Joyce deJong says many medical examiners at work today aren't up to date with their practices, hampering the ability of authorities to solve crimes, win convictions and answer survivors' questions.
The grant will pay for two training sessions in 2011. One will be in the spring at Michigan State's East Lansing campus, and the other will be in the fall at the time of the Michigan Association of Medical Examiners' annual meeting in Mount Pleasant.
The training is free to participants.
