'Harry Potter Lexicon' case and fair use event set for this Saturday at Cooley

A panel discussion on J.K. Rowling v. RDR Books, also known as the Harry Potter Lexicon case, will headline a day-long program on copyright law and fair use for artists, students and legal practitioners on Saturday, Nov. 13 at Cooley Law School in Ann Arbor. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. RDR Books and the founder of "The Harry Potter Lexicon" website became embroiled in a copyright battle with J.K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter books, and Warner Bros., producers of the Harry Potter films when RDR Books sought to publish a book version of the Lexicon website, a reference guide for all things Harry Potter. Rowling and Warner Bros. claimed that the publication would constitute copyright infringement and RDR Books claimed the right to publish the information under the fair use doctrine. Panelists and presenters for the day will include: --Jack Bernard, assistant general counsel for the University of Michigan (keynote address: 10 a.m.-10:45 a.m.); --Lawrence Jordan, managing partner of the Jaffe Raitt Heuer and Weiss Ann Arbor office (History and Overview of Copyright Law: 10:45 a.m. - 11:45 a.m.); --Julie Ahrens, associate director of the Stanford Fair Use Project (Lunch and lecture - The Fair Use Doctrine: 11:45 a.m. - 1:15 p.m.); --Roger Rapoport, owner of RDR Books; Ahrens, Jordan, and moderator Matthew W. Bower, attorney with Safford and Baker (Harry Potter Lexicon Case panel discussion: 1:15 p.m. - 3 p.m.). The event is sponsored by Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library, Thomas M. Cooley Law School, the State Bar of Michigan Arts, Communications, Entertainment and Sports (ACES) Law Section and the Right to Write Fund.
