Local coats program keeps people warm and helps to save animals

The Oakland Pet Adoption Center is offering discounts on pet adoptions to anyone who drops off new or gently-worn coats at the animal shelter at 1700 Brown Road in Auburn Hills. The coats will be donated to the Oakland County Sheriff's Coats for the Cold Program, which ends Tuesday, Nov. 30. "We are combining the Sheriff's mission of providing people in need with warm coats with our mission of finding homes for animals," said Lawrence Obrecht, Animal Control Division manager. Oakland Pet Adoption Center will discount the adoption of a dog or adult cat $10 for each coat donated up to a limit of $50. Adult cat adoptions will be free to anyone who donates five coats. Kitten adoptions will be discounted $10 only with the donation of one coat. "There are lots of animals that need a good home and many people challenged by the times who will need coats for the winter," said Joanie Toole, administrative supervisor. "We encourage people to reach into their hearts and make a donation and adopt a new pet before the end of the month."
