Oakland County Health Division reminds residents during National Influenza Vaccination Week (Dec. 5-11) that the best defense against flu viruses is to get vaccinated and practice good preventive measures.
"With flu activity increasing across the country and the holiday season upon us, your best defense is to get vaccinated and practice good preventive measures," said Health Division Manager/Health Officer Kathy Forzley. "People should not be fooled by the mild flu season these past few months--flu is on the rise.
"The flu strains included in the flu shot are a very good match to flu viruses seen so far this year, and a great way to protect yourself this flu season," Forzley added.
Seasonal flu vaccine remains available at all three Oakland County Health Division offices in Pontiac (1200 N Telegraph Road, Building 34E), Southfield (27725 Greenfield Road), and Walled Lake (1010 East West Maple). Office hours are noon to 8 p.m. Monday and 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.
Pre-registration is encouraged at www.oakgov.com/health or by calling (248) 858-7350 for North Oakland, (248) 424-7120 for South Oakland, and (248) 926-3302 for West Oakland. The pre-registration system allows clients to select their preferred clinic location, date and time and will also provide a consent form that must be taken to the clinic where pre-enrolled. Walk-in clients will be accepted based on availability of appointment times.
Flu shots are $11 each. Online payment options include Visa, Mastercard, Medicare and/or Medicaid. Cash, Medicare and/or Medicaid are the only available payment options for walk-in clients who do not pre-register online.
In addition to getting an annual flu shot, some ways to protect yourself and your loved ones during the holidays and throughout the winter months and beyond include:
* Washing hands frequently--especially after using the bathroom, changing diapers and before preparing and eating food. Rub hands vigorously with soap and warm running water for at least 20 seconds.
* Cleaning and disinfecting all surface areas frequently. Areas that need special attention include door knobs, faucet handles, toilets, sinks and trash cans.
* Staying home when you are sick and avoiding contact with others when possible. Wash any clothing, bedding or other linens that are used by those who are sick.
* Covering both nose and mouth with tissue when coughing and sneezing, then putting the tissue in the trash and washing your hands right away.
* Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth--germs spread this way.
These prevention methods are effective in fighting off many illnesses including cold, flu and stomach viruses.
