DETROIT (AP) -- Eight suburban Detroit communities that participate in the annual Woodward Dream Cruise will receive $2,000 each to help defray local expenses.
The Detroit Free Press says Berkley, Bloomfield Hills, Bloomfield Township, Ferndale, Huntington Woods, Pleasant Ridge, Pontiac and Royal Oak will split $16,000 from the nonprofit's Dream Cruise operating board.
The free, sponsor-supported event has for three years faced lost sponsorships and lawsuits.
Leslie Helwig, treasurer of the Dream Cruise board, said the nonprofit has its finances back in order.
Participating cities split $145,000 in proceeds from sponsorships and merchandise sales in 2007.
Organizers said last summer's 16th annual cruise, promoted as the world's largest one-day automotive event, lured 40,000 cars and 1.5 million people.
