It was a who's who of the local legal world as Justices, judges, lawyers and friends gathered at the Michigan Historical Museum to have William C. Whitbeck sign his first novel, "To Account for Murder," a legal thriller.
The event, held on December first, was sponsored by the Historical Society of Greater Lansing, the Michigan Historical Commission, the Michigan Political History Society, Thomas M. Cooley Law School, Michigan State University College of Law, and the Ingham County Legal News.
The novel, now available at local book stores and on line, is set in post-war Michigan, is a layered courtroom drama about murder, sex, corruption, and politics. The book is described as being on one level the story of the killing of state senator while on another level it is about loss and its consequences. The climax of the book takes place at Jackson State Penitentiary, the world's largest walled prison.
Judge Whitbeck was a practicing attorney before he became a Judge of the Michigan Court of Appeals where he served as Chief Judge. During his years immersed in the law, he has seen the legal system from the bench and in front of it. He brings that experience to his novel, laying the system bare.
