ROMULUS (AP) -- A package of bills aimed at boosting regional economic development around airports and other transportation hubs has been signed into law by Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm.
The governor signed the bills Wednesday at Detroit Metropolitan Airport in Romulus.
The so-called "Next Michigan" legislation will allow the development of regional entities to offer economic development incentives to companies that rely on multiple modes of commerce or transportation. One of the goals is to have companies locate or add jobs near airports or other major transportation facilities.
Communities surrounding the Detroit Metro and Willow Run airports already have signed agreements to be part of such a development.
The Michigan Legislature approved the bills earlier this month.
