Department of State efforts to feed those in need a success

Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land recently announced that Department of State employees and customers donated more than $1,770 and nearly 9,000 pounds of food to this year's Michigan Harvest Gathering campaign. "In Michigan, nearly 1 in 6 children is at risk of hunger, but our customers and staff stepped up to meet the challenge," Land said. "As always, the generosity of our residents is overwhelming. I want to thank everyone who donated to the Michigan Harvest Gathering for putting meals on tables this holiday season." Harvest Gathering collection boxes were placed in Secretary of State offices and state office buildings. The Ionia office ranked first in food collection, bringing in 1,035 pounds. The department's Secondary Complex in Lansing collected 756 pounds, while the Flint Area SUPER!Center brought in 362 pounds. The department has been gathering food for Harvest Gathering in its branch offices since 1999. The campaign was coordinated by the Food Bank Council of Michigan, which supplies the state's regional food banks through donations of food and money. The regional food banks serve food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters in every Michigan county. Between Sept. 16 and Nov. 10 this year, Michigan Harvest Gathering collected more than 160,000 pounds of food and $908,000. This total excludes the Department of State, which extended its campaign through Dec. 10.
