Hugh Clarke, Jr. was named by Governor Jennifer Granholm to fill a vacant seat on 54A District Court Bench. He will replace Judge Amy Krause, who was appointed to the Michigan Court of Appeals.
Clarke has resigned from the Lansing Board of Education where he served for about seven years. He was President of the Board in 2007. Clarke will take the bench immediately.
Clarke graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in criminal justice. He attended the Detroit City Police Academy, however, funding cuts caused him to take another path. He enrolled in Thomas M. Cooley Law School, graduating in 1979. He began his legal career as the Associate General Counsel for the State Senate, moving on in 1981 to join the law firm of Rosebaum and Holland. He founded Hugh Clarke and Associates in 1989, working on high profile criminal law cases.
Clarke was one of the attorneys representing Claude McCollum, wrongly convicted of murdering a Lansing Community College professor in a classroom. He settled his wrongful-conviction suit for $2 million.
Clarke, 56, is a resident of Lansing. He and his wife, Judith, have one son, Hugh Barrington Clarke, 1V.
