Local woman to chair national committee for settlement group

Christine Logan, executive vice president of American Settlement Centers in Farmington Hills, recently was appointed chair of the National Structured Settlements Trade Association Political Action Committee. A member of the PAC board for two years, Logan is the first Michigan resident to serve as committee chair. She also is a member of the NSSTA Education Committee, which plans and organizes three national educational programs each year. NSSTA represents settlement specialists, casualty insurance companies, self-insured entities, life insurers, attorneys, and others who serve defendants and plaintiffs involved in personal injury claims. Its PAC is an "adjunct group that is squarely focused on promoting to members of the U.S. Congress the value and security structured settlements provide," according to Logan, who has spent 22 years in the field of settlement consulting. "There are two sections of the Internal Revenue Code that are vital to structured settlements because they allow the income of such settlements to flow to the recipients on a tax-free basis," Logan explained. The NSSTA PAC, Logan indicated, is "charged with educating and supporting members of Congress, particularly those who sit on the powerful House Ways & Means Committee and the Senate Finance Committee, about the necessity to preserve the tax-free status of these types of settlements. "It's vital that we build awareness of the serious issues confronted by injury victims and their families so that they remain protected by the current tax code provisions," Logan said. A resident of Waterford and the mother of two children, Logan graduated from Michigan State University in 1991 with a degree in communications. Locally, she serves on the board of the West Bloomfield Educational Foundation and Lighthouse PATH, an Oakland County organization dedicated to the cause of helping homeless women and their children.
