LANSING (AP) -- The Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan says its research indicates some criminal penalties remain in place for possessing synthetic marijuana and similar drugs.
A legislative mistake last month has caused confusion over penalties.
Possession of the drugs and other substances such as BZP was made illegal with a state law that took effect in October. But officials in Gov. Jennifer Granholm's administration are among those saying the criminal penalties for offenders were inadvertently repealed this month when the Legislature passed and she signed a separate bill related to drug sentences.
The prosecutors' group says its analysis shows some criminal penalties remain in effect. But those penalties are for felonies and are twice as severe as the misdemeanor penalties previously in place.
Lawmakers plan to fix the law this year.
