County offers test kits as part of national Radon Action Month

Radon test kits are now just $5 at Oakland County Health Division offices during National Radon Action Month this January. This half-off price is designed to increase home testing for the potentially cancerous gas.
"For just a few dollars, you can test your home for radon, which is the second greatest cause of lung cancer. The test is quick, easy and affordable," said Tony Drautz, administrator of Oakland County Health Division's Environmental Health Services Unit.
Radon is a naturally occurring, invisible, odorless gas that is usually harmless outdoors. When the gas is trapped in buildings, however, it can be a health hazard; it is the second leading cause of lung cancer in humans. The Environmental Protection Agency says there is moderate potential for elevated radon levels in Oakland County homes.
"You can't see or smell radon and people tend to ignore the possibility that it might exist at high levels in their homes," said Drautz. "The best time to test your home for radon is during the cooler months when the windows and doors are closed."
Radon test kits for homes are available at all Health Division offices:
* Pontiac - 1200 North Telegraph, Building 34E.
* Southfield - 27725 Greenfield Road.
* Walled Lake - 1010 East West Maple Road.
If high levels of radon are found in the home, steps to address it can be found at www.oakgov.com/health. Under "Programs & Services," click "Environmental Health Services," then select the link labeled "Air."
For additional information about radon or radon testing, call the Oakland County Health Division at (248) 858-1312, (248) 424-7190, or (248) 926-3305.
