New non-profit to collect prom dresses and give to young women who can't afford them otherwise

A new non--profit charitable organization has formed in Brooklyn dedicated to "enabling the dream of young women who wish to attend their prom by providing gently used gowns and accessories to junior and senior high school girls who cannot afford to purchase them," organizers said.
"Dreaming of Dresses" held it first board meeting just before the holidays and is currently seeking sponsorships to cover operational costs such as marketing materials, dry cleaning costs, office supplies and postage.
It's first Annual Dress Drive is set for Jan. 29 and the group is asking for donations of gently used prom gowns between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. at Brooklynm Bridal and Prom.
Dreaming of Dresses accepts gently used gowns, formal dresses, shoes and accessories. Gowns must be clean, in like-new condition (not more than five years old) and preferably already dry cleaned.
Officers for the organization include, Janet Kapa, executive director; Jeanne Merrill, director; and newest member Niki Stevens, director.
"We utilize volunteers who donate their time and talents to coordinate the collection of the gowns and distribute them to girls in need," a spokesperson said.
To find out how you can get involved as a volunteer or sponsor, or to inquire how to get a dress for a 2011 prom, contact Janet Kapa at 517-592-8882 or visit www.dreamingofdresses.org.
