Michigan Historical Museum exhibit highlights artifacts from 1945 murder of State Senator Warren G. Hooper

The Michigan State Police was formed in 1917 as a temporary domestic security force during World War I. The exhibit, located on the second floor near the elevators, includes other historic materials representing State Police efforts to protect public safety. Among them is a pen that is right out of a James Bond movie. It could shoot a single bullet or emit tear gas.
''Michigan Appeals Judge William Whitbeck's new novel, To Account for Murder, has renewed interest in the Hooper case,'' said Sandra Clark, director of the Michigan Historical Center, which includes the museum. ''These artifacts and documents remind us of the darker side of our history and of the people who dedicate their lives to law enforcement and justice.''
The Michigan Historical Center is part of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment. The museum is open seven days a week. It is located inside the Michigan Library and Historical Center, 702 West Kalamazoo St., Lansing. The museum and visitor parking are on the north side of Kalamazoo Street, two blocks east of M. L. King Jr. Boulevard. Admission is free. Weekend parking is free. For more information, visit www. michigan.gov/museum or call (517) 373-3359.
The Department of Natural Resources and Environment is committed to the conservation, protection, management, and accessible use and enjoyment of the state's environment, natural resources, and related economic interests for current and future generations. Learn more at www.michigan.gov/dnre.
