Larry Royster named Chief Clerk of the Michigan Court of Appeals

Larry Royster, Research Director of the Michigan Court of Appeals, has been appointed Chief Clerk of that court, Chief Judge William B. Murphy announced.
"The judges of this court are delighted to have someone of Mr. Royster's talent and experience ready to assume the responsibilities of Chief Clerk," said Murphy. "He has served with distinction in past positions he has held in this Court's administration and was the clear choice of our judges."
Royster will also continue as Research Director, Murphy explained. His appointment as Chief Clerk becomes effective January 31, 2011.
Royster has degrees from Michigan State University and the Thomas M. Cooley Law School. He joined the Court of Appeals in 1986 and has served as a research attorney, a judicial law clerk to Judge Richard M. Maher, Advance Research Supervisor, Deputy Research Director, and Research Director.
Mr. Royster will replace Chief Clerk Sandra Schultz Mengel, who will retire from the Court effective January 31, 2011.
Murphy praised Mengel, saying that she "has served this Court as Chief Clerk in an exemplary fashion for almost 10 years and will be sorely missed. Her administrative leadership has been a critical component of this Court's success."
Murphy added, "The judges have great confidence that Mr. Royster will, as Ms. Mengel did, provide valuable contributions as Chief Clerk. I have complete confidence in Mr. Royster's ability to continue and improve upon the efficient administration of this Court for the benefit of the Michigan citizens we serve."
