PONTIAC (AP) -- A negotiated payout for existing contracts with two unions representing members of the Pontiac Police Department may be needed before Oakland County Sheriff deputies can take over patrols.
The Oakland Press of Pontiac and Detroit Free Press say the Oakland County Board of Commissioners' 18-5 vote last Thursday approved the deal that also includes dispatch services. But ending current contracts that expire by 2013 is necessary before sheriff deputies can hit the streets in the city.
Emergency Financial Manager Michael Stampfler says the proposal would save the cash-strapped community $2 million annually.
The $10.2 million contract calls for 74 deputies to serve the city of about 66,000 people.
Pontiac currently has 51 officers after 23 layoff notices were handed out late last year.
