Equal Access to Justice Day
Cooley Law School celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day with an Equal Access to Justice Day Breakfast on Monday, Jan. 17, at its Auburn Hills campus.
The program was made possible because of a collaboration with Cooley's Diversity Committee, Cooley's Center for Ethics, Service, and Professionalism; and the State Bar of Michigan's Young Lawyers Section.
Awards were presented during the program to student winners of the State Bar of Michigan Young Lawyers Section Essay Competition. The visiting students were all asked to describe the meaning of diversity, peace, love for mankind and justice drawing on the practice of Dr. King as well as their own life experience.
In addition, Cooley Law Professor Stevie Swanson was honored with the 2011 Equal Access to Justice Award which honors an individual who has shown his/her loyal dedication, unwavering commitment, outstanding contributions, and diligent efforts to improve justice for all.
Swanson joined Cooley in February 2006. She previously served as director of Legal Services and Policy for Community Legal Resources in Detroit. She supervised the pro bono program, provided direct legal services to non-profit corporations in Michigan, and facilitated the Affordability Preservation Project to discern the most viable mechanism for preserving affordable housing units. Swanson is faculty advisor for the Public Interest Law Students Association and PAD (Phi Alpha Delta). She serves as a member of the Michigan Land Title Standards Committee of the State Bar.
