Man charged in soccer club theft sentenced

DETROIT (AP) -- A man who authorities say embezzled more than $100,000 from a suburban Detroit soccer club while serving as the nonprofit's treasurer has been sentenced to two years of probation.
Brian Molloy of Farmington was sentenced Wednesday in Detroit. He pleaded no contest last month to embezzling more than $20,000. An agreement with prosecutors included $87,000 in restitution, which he paid.
A message seeking comment was left after regular business hours Wednesday seeking comment from defense lawyer Robert Morad.
Authorities say thefts from the Livonia City Soccer Club began in the summer of 2008, and were reported in September by two board members after a review of bank statements. Molloy was removed from his post.
Police say they believe Molloy used the money to pay bills and make purchases.
