Deductions continue for non-union state workers

LANSING (AP) -- About 14,000 state workers who aren't represented by unions won't be getting a boost in their paychecks anytime soon.
The Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget said last Thursday it will continue to withhold 3 percent of those employees' salaries for a fund that helps pay for retiree health care.
The 3 percent deduction is called for in a state law passed last year. The Michigan Civil Service Commission voted earlier this week to rescind the deduction but Republican House Speaker Jase Bolger and others are contesting the commission's action.
Republican Gov. Rick Snyder's administration has said it's unclear if the commission has the power to rescind the health care fund deductions.
The deductions are expected to continue until the matter is settled in court.
