Judge sets Sept. 13 trial for Mich. militia case

DETROIT (AP) -- It could be a very busy fall at the federal courthouse in Detroit. A judge last week set a Sept. 13 trial for nine people accused of conspiring to commit rebellion against the United States and other crimes. The government says they're members of a southern Michigan militia called Hutaree. Three weeks later, on Oct. 4, the Nigerian man charged with trying to blow up an airplane faces trial. Of course, plea deals, the dismissal of charges or other factors could change the schedule. Defense attorneys in the militia case are disputing the government's claim of any conspiracy. The deadline to challenge evidence is May 2. Published: Mon, Feb 21, 2011
