'Light Opera' on tap-- Michigan Theatre receives grant to host vocal competition March 5

The Michigan Theatre has been awarded a minigrant of $1,250 from the State of Michigan's Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs (MCACA) through Jackson's Ella Sharp Museum of Art and History. The Theatre will use the minigrant to fund, in part, the eighth annual Harold Haugh Light Opera Vocal Competition, which will be held for the first time in Jackson on Saturday, March 5. The finals contest for the seven finalists will start at 7:30 p.m. at the Michigan Theatre. Young classical singers from the Great Lakes Area will travel to Jackson to compete for scholarship prize money. They will be judged on their singing ability as well as stage presence and ability to entertain. In addition to the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs and the Ella Sharp Museum of Art and History, this unique musical event is sponsored jointly by the Jackson Symphony Orchestra, the Comic Opera Guild of Ann Arbor, the Michigan Theatre, and other donors. The goal of the Harold Haugh Vocal Competition is to discover classically trained singers who have developed the ability to combine acting and singing, and to encourage them to further develop their talent. The competition will be judged by a panel of professional singers and educators who have performed at The Metropolitan Opera, the New York City Opera, or in other major venues. A First Place Scholarship of $2,000 will be awarded to the winner, with smaller awards given to the remaining six finalists. The audience will select their favorite for an additional award. Bart Hawley of JTV will serve as the Master of Ceremonies. The distinguished panel of judges consists of George Shirley, professor of voice, and Freda Herseth, associate professor of voice, both of the University of Michigan School of Music; Stephen Osmond, conductor of the Jackson Symphony Orchestra; Susan Anthony of the Indiana University School of Music, and Nada Radakovich of the Flint School of Music. The Parma-Western High School Choir under the direction of Ronald Rudland will also perform on stage. Tickets at the Michigan Theater are on sale at a price of $10. Following the Finals Concert, a reception will be held at Daryl's Downtown Restaurant where everyone can meet the judges and the young singers.
