Counterinsurgency campaigns focus of Wayne Law lecture

Wayne State University Law School's Program for International Legal Studies and the International Law Student Association are pleased to host a lecture by John Hutson, dean and president emeritus of the University of New Hampshire School of Law (formerly Franklin Pierce Law Center), from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 2, in the Law School's Spencer M. Partrich Auditorium. Hutson's lecture is titled "Rules of Engagement in Counterinsurgency Campaigns." "U.S. counterinsurgency doctrine is now on full display in Afghanistan and was previously central to our strategy in the Iraq conflict," said Wayne Law Professor Gregory Fox, director of the Program for International Legal Studies. "Drawing on critical aspects of international humanitarian law, the doctrine seeks to balance effective military tactics with efforts to win support from the civilian population. Dean Hutson is the ideal person to explain how American policy has navigated these difficult legal straits." Hutson served as dean and president of the University of New Hampshire School of Law from July 2000 through January 2011. He is a retired rear admiral, attorney and former judge advocate general of the U.S. Navy. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit (with three gold stars), the Meritorious Service Medal (with two gold stars), the Navy Commendation Medal and the Navy Achievement Medal. Hutson also serves on the board of directors of Human Rights First. A North Muskegon, Mich., native, Hutson earned a bachelor of arts from Michigan State University and law degrees from the University of Minnesota Law School and Georgetown University Law Center. The event is free and open to the public, and lunch will be provided. Parking is available for $4.75 in Structure #1 across from the Law School on West Palmer Street in Detroit.
