New citizens will have opportunity to register to vote at ceremonies
Secretary of State Ruth Johnson will send representatives to two naturalization ceremonies in the Detroit area in order to offer new citizens the opportunity to register to vote.
The ceremonies are Friday, March 4, at 10 a.m. at the American Polish Cultural Center, 2975 E. Maple Road in Troy, and Friday, March 11, at 10 a.m. at the Macedonian Cultural Center, 43133 Ryan Road in Sterling Heights.
"Michigan's newest citizens have displayed a strong work ethic to reach this point in their journey," Johnson said. "I congratulate each and every one, and I now encourage them to register to vote."
Johnson serves as Michigan's chief election officer and she will have a voter registration table on site for the convenience of the newly sworn citizens. People may also register to vote at their local clerk's office, a Secretary of State office or by mail.
The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Bureau, part of the Department of Homeland Security, is conducting the ceremonies.
For information about branch office locations and additional services, visit the Secretary of State website www.Michigan.gov/sos or call the Department of State Information Center to speak to a customer-service representative at (888) SOS-MICH (767-6424).
