Swainson Award looking for those who preserve Michigan's history

LANSING (AP) -- The Michigan Historical Commission is accepting nominations for the Gov. John B. Swainson Award for public workers who have gone beyond their job description to help preserve the state's history. The commission is accepting nominations through April 1, and the annual award is open to municipal, county and state employees. The commission created the award in 1996 in honor of the governor, legislator and judge. Democrat John Swainson died in 1994. He was elected governor in 1960. He narrowly lost his bid for a second term to Republican George Romney in 1962, then served as a Wayne County circuit judge and won a seat on the Michigan Supreme Court in 1970. ---------------- Online: Rules and nomination forms: http://www.michigan.gov/mhcommission Published: Tue, Mar 8, 2011
