The well-known local pioneer of "self-determination for women and girls," Jean King, will be honored on March 26 at Eagle Crest by the Women's Center of Southeastern Michigan.
The center has announced that it is renaming the center after King. Proceeds from the event will benefit The Jean Ledwith King Women's Center of Southeastern Michigan.
The evening will begin with a reception from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. followed by dinner from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
Keynote speaker will be Michigan graduate Micki King (no relation), the 1972 Springboard Diving Olympic Gold Medalist, who went on to coach at the Air Force Academy. She also served as assistant athletic director at the University of Kentucky.
A spokesperson for the center noted that, "Jean Ledwith King is a 1968 graduate of the University of Michigan Law School. She co-founded Focus on Equal Employment for Women and the Michigan Democratic Party Women's Caucus and was one of 100 women who founded the National Women's Political Caucus.
"Her favorite cause, and the one for which she is most well-known, is her involvement with issues surrounding Title IX, which states:
'No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of or be subjected to discrimination under any educational programs or activities receiving federal financial funding.'
"She has worked tirelessly to open athletic opportunities for high school and college women by using Title IX in both state and federal courts.
"In 1989, King was admitted to the Michigan Women's Hall of Fame. In 2006, she received the high honor of Champion of Justice by the State Bar of Michigan. Today, King continues to work for women's issues and advancement."
Center Executive Director Kimberli Cumming noted that "Jean King's successes have advanced the vision of self determination for women and girls and led to more equal opportunities in education, employment, athletics and politics.
"Hers is a mission that we feel parallels the goals of the Women's Center.
"We also are committed to gender equity and we provide comprehensive services for women and girls to achieve self-determination in their emotional and economic lives.
"Through her work as an activist and attorney, Jean King has touched many lives. We are pleased and proud to be able to honor Jean with the event and the renaming of the center and we expect to see people from around the country in attendance," she said.
