Board chair supports mental health awareness event

Mental illness and suicide amongst children and teens continues to rise in Lake Orion and across the county reflecting a silent epidemic. In an effort to bring awareness to this growing problem and to educate others on the issues of mental health, the 1000 Conversations about Mental Health of Lake Orion, an outreach program of the MINDS Program Inc., will host the "Lake Orion's Got Talent Show." The talent show will be hosted Saturday, March 19, from 6 to 9 pm, in Lake Orion High School Performing Arts Center, located at 495 East Scripps Road, in Lake Orion. Admission is $10 with all proceeds benefiting the MINDS Program. To purchase tickets, call (248) 644-8003. "Mental illness and suicide in our community is real. It is something that we as a community need to recognize. We need to support programs that provide assistance in these areas," stated Michael Gingell, chairman of the Oakland County Board of Commissioners (R-Lake Orion). Gingell is a co-sponsor of the event and is encouraging the community to attend and to help in this effort. The MINDS Program's 1000 Conversations about Mental Health in Lake Orion grassroot efforts will increase awareness and education of mental health issues; begin dialogue about mental health, and encourage those in need of mental health assistance to seek it, with the hopes of developing a national model for communities across the state and nation. The MINDS Program reaches 20,000 students annually across the state and is designed to educate adolescents about psychiatric disorders as well as de-stigmatize mental illnesses and prevent suicide through open educational discussion. Funds from the talent show will be used to make presentations about mental health available to all Lake Orion High School and Middle School students as well as provide monthly meetings open to the public, educate members of the community regarding mental health, provide mental health resources, educate parents of youth on warning signs and improve communication between parents and children.
