State planing cable guardrails

LANSING (AP) -- Nearly 300 miles of Michigan freeway is getting $40 million in steel cable guardrails to prevent vehicles from crossing medians into opposing traffic. The Detroit News recently reported that U.S. 23 in Livingston County's Green Oak Township is among the areas scheduled to get the cables, most likely in 2012. That's where the driver crossed a median in October and smashed into an oncoming vehicle, killing four people in injuring four others. Other freeways that are expected to receive or already have the cable system include Interstates 94, 96, 196, 75, 275 and 69. The high-tension cable strung along the median are designed to keep vehicles that lose control from sliding into lanes of oncoming traffic. Some motorcyclists, however, have voiced concerns the cables could be dangerous to them. Published: Thu, Mar 31, 2011
