The University of Detroit Mercy Law Review hosted a symposium on Friday, March 11, at the Detroit Athletic Club on the topic of "Celebrating an Anniversary: A Twenty-Year Review of Justice Clarence Thomas' Jurisprudence and Contributions as an Associate Justice on the U.S. Supreme Court."
The symposium was moderated by Michigan Supreme Court Justice Brian Zahra (fourth from left) and Michigan Court of Appeals Judge Christopher Murray (sixth from right).
The UDM law students invited scholars from across the political spectrum--some of whom find Justice Thomas' jurisprudence appealing and some who do not.
The morning session focused on individual liberty while the afternoon session explored governmental powers.
Taking part in the symposium were (left to right) Ralph Rossum of Claremont McKenna, Christopher Smith of MSU, Lee Strang of Toledo, Ilya Somin of George Mason, UDM Law Dean Lloyd Semple, keynote lunch speaker John Eastman who is Justice Thomas' former clerk and the former dean and current Donald P. Kennedy Chair in Law at Chapman University School of Law, Scott Gerber of Ohio Northern, Sean Springer, Jonathan Entin of Case Western Reserve, Richard Broughton of UDM Law, and Richard Albert of Boston College.
