Detroit approves measure to raise water rates
DETROIT (AP) -- Water rates for millions of customers in the Detroit area will rise by an average of 9 percent under a measure approved by the Detroit City Council.
The measure was passed last week by a 4-3 vote. The Detroit News reports the average water increase would be 8.9 percent in the suburbs and 9.3 percent in Detroit.
The Detroit Water and Sewerage Department says the increases are necessary to compensate for declining revenues.
New rates for communities served by Detroit's water system go into effect July 1. Communities decide whether to pass the increases to residents.
