Michigan auto insurance fee to rise again in July

LANSING (AP) -- Michigan motorists will pay $1.91 more this year to a fund helping support seriously injured accident victims. The Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association last Friday raised the annual assessment to $145 per insured vehicle, the highest amount it has ever assessed. The assessment is passed on from insurance companies to drivers' annual insurance bills. The fee takes effect July 1. Michigan is the only state that mandates unlimited lifetime medical benefits for people seriously injured in car accidents. The MCCA paid out $897 million for claim costs last year. The MCCA is a private, nonprofit association created by state law in 1978. All auto insurance companies operating in Michigan are required to be members. Published: Tue, Mar 29, 2011
