Hon. Amy R. Krause, welcomed lawyers, judges, and friends at the Second Annual Barristers Night where the Young Lawyers Section of the Ingham County Bar Association presented its "Top 5 under 35" awards.
"I do want to say thank you to everyone for being here with us," Judge Krause opening the ceremony held at the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center on March 24th. "This evening gives us an opportunity to recognize our young lawyers. I think it is really important for the more experienced lawyers to mentor the newer lawyers. It is our responsibility to do that."
Pat Gallagher, President of the Ingham County Bar Association presented the awards to:
Kristin B. Bellar practices with Clark Hill PLC specializing in Climate Change / Sustainability, Commercial Litigation, Construction Law, Environmental Law, Green Building, iGreenLaw, Litigation, Municipal Liability, Municipal Meetings, Ordinances and Public Pension Law.
Jessica S. Fox, with Nolan, Thomsen & Villas, said that being a lawyer is "who you are and that is important to all of us. I thank you for recognizing that part of me that is a lawyer." Fox is a graduate of Vermont Law School and has a Master of Studies in Environmental Law. She is a research attorney and part of the Hillman Advocacy Program.
"What a humbling experience to be up here tonight," said Kristina S. Lyke, Law Office of Kristina S. Lyke. "I am very grateful to be given this award." Lyke is a graduate of Thomas M. Cooley Law School and practices primarily family and criminal law.
Karen L. Philips, with the Nichols Law Firm, thanked those who nominated her, her family and the other attorneys at her law firm. She focuses her legal practice on criminal defense and family law including divorce, child custody, and juvenile delinquency cases.
Douglas Meeks thanked his partner and his family. A principal of Cataldo & Meeks, he is a general practice attorney licensed to practice in all Michigan state courts as well as the U.S. District Court for the Western District and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.
The Ingham County Bar presents the award to recognize the outstanding young lawyers of Ingham County. The Young Lawyers wanted the award to be inclusive rather than an exclusive process. It was not limited to one area of the law and was created to recognize the lawyers that go beyond their caseloads and billable hours. The criteria are 1) knowledge of the law, 2) contribution to the legal community as well as the community at large and 3) professionalism towards the court, other lawyers and their clients.
