Brad A. Brelinski, an attorney with the Jackson law firm of Curtis and Curtis, P.C., is looking forward to the Paws in the Park event in May.

Named chairman of the board of Cascades Humane Society in January, Brelinski thinks there is great fundraising potential in the rejuvenated event.

"Paws in the Park existed a number of years ago, but we thought it would be a great idea to bring it back. It's not only a fundraiser, but it'll be a nice family event.

"There's no cost, but individuals or teams, we are calling them 'packs,' can pledge if they want to, in whatever amount they wish, to go to CHS.

"The centerpiece of the event will be a 1.3 mile walk around Cascades Park. We'll also have a classic K-9 show, police dog demonstration, clicker training, agility course, face painting for kids, photos with your pet, pet caricatures and many other family-friendly activities.

"We'll have some prizes for top fundraisers in adult, youth and team categories and of course, participants can bring their pets.

"We think this will be a major fundraiser this year and in the future for Cascades and I'm really happy to be the board chair as we roll out the event this year," he said.

Brelinski added that the event will take place on Saturday, May 14, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The walk will take place at 11 a.m.

Brelinski got involved with the humane society in 2009 joining the board in January of that year.

"I've always been a pet lover; my family had a golden retriever when I was growing up for our family pet, so getting involved with Cascades was a natural for me.

"It's important to me to believe in what I'm donating my time to and this was a very easy cause for me to get behind. It was one of the first organizations I became involved with after completing my education.

"I feel passionate about the cause and their mission," he said.

A native of Jackson, Brelinski specializes in business services; litigation; estate planning and probate; and real estate and landlord/tenant issues at Curtis and Curtis.

He earned his Bachelor of Business Administration degree, cum laude, in 2002 from the Haworth College of Business at Western Michigan University, where he majored in finance and a law degree from Wayne State University Law School in 2005.

In addition to his work with the humane society, Brelinski is the current president of the Jackson County Bar Association and is a board member of the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce.

"I've been president of the local bar association since last July. It's been a productive year.

"We have a great group of attorneys here, very collegial, and for the most part, everyone works well together, even though we are adversaries on cases.

"We all know that we have to advocate on behalf of our clients during the day, but we also have a life outside the law.

"Our annual holiday party in December was a great success and we had a record attendance. We collected a tremendous amount of canned goods on behalf of the Jackson Interfaith Shelter.

"Through the years, the bar association has tried to focus on giving back to the community and to non-profit organizations in the community. Our meetings typically highlight an organization and ask for donations from our members to assist them.

"And once a year we give a scholarship to a law student or incoming law student from the Jackson area. We think that's a great way to give something back to the community and promote the legal profession and Jackson students at the same time."

Brelinski also believes in the local Chamber of Commerce.

"It was natural for me to get involved with the chamber with my business background and business interests. It's a great way to advocate for business. The chamber has done a great job to promote business in general and in Jackson in particular.

"The chamber and the Enterprise Group, along with government and business leaders work really well together and we are hearing better and better news about the local economic climate due to their efforts.

"It takes time and of course we need to see a turnaround across the state, but I applaud the time and effort that our local leaders are putting in to improve Jackson," he concluded.
