Wayne Law announces 2011 International Public Interest Law Fellowships

Wayne State University Law School's Program for International Legal Studies is pleased to announce the 2011 International Public Interest Law Fellowship recipients. Rachel Hom, Jamal Koussan, Megan Mathews and Clairissa Radyko will gain legal experience through $5,000 fellowships that will allow them to work at various non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the Middle East, Asia, India and Eastern Europe. The fellowships, first launched by the program in 2009, allow students to work for NGOs in countries around the world during the summer after their first or second year at Wayne Law. Partner organizations engage in advocacy on a broad range of issues including human rights, women's rights, the environment, law reform and more. The students will gain front-line experience working on cutting-edge issues in legal systems very different from their own. "We are very excited about this class of International Public Interest Law Fellowship recipients," said Professor Gregory Fox, director of the program. "They have been given an opportunity to work with courageous public interest lawyers in regions where the efforts of talented and reform-minded lawyers can make a huge difference." The recipients for 2011 and the organizations they are working for are: * Rachel Hom, The Crisis Centre, Nassau, The Bahamas. * Jamal Koussan, The American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative, Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. * Megan Mathews, People's Watch, Tamil Nadu, India. * Clairissa Radyko, Lebanese Emigrant Research Center, Kesrwan, Lebanon. "This fellowship will give me firsthand experience outside of an academic setting to participate in laws designed to aid those who may be underrepresented or overlooked in mainstream society."
