Troy Walk Like MADD event raises $50,998
Mothers Against Drunk Driving® (MADD) staff, volunteers and supporters, including more than 350 walkers, participated in the Troy Walk Like MADD® event on Saturday, April 2, and raised $50,998 to help eliminate drunk driving and support victims/survivors.
The Troy walk was one of 36 Walk Like MADD events nationwide, all raising awareness and funding for MADD's lifesaving mission and its Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving®, which calls for high-visibility law enforcement, ignition interlocks or "in-car breathalyzers" for all convicted drunk drivers and support for the development of advanced technology to turn cars into the cure for drunk driving.
The Troy walk was held indoors at the Oakland Mall and the national presenting sponsor was State Farm Insurance. Local Walk like MADD sponsors were: Ford Driving Skills For Life, Takata, 96.3 WDVD, 93.1 DOUG FM, The Macomb Daily, The Oakland Press, Buckfire and Buckfire PC, Fraser & Souweidane PC, and HealthPlus of Michigan.
Led by Blaine Fowler and Dana Lundon of the 96.3 FM WDVD morning show, the 350 walkers laced up their sneakers and walked a 5K route indoors at the mall. After completing the course, participants enjoyed numerous post-walk festivities, including kids and adult's activities, exhibits, entertainment by DOUG FM and 96.3 FM, refreshments donated by mall merchants, a silent auction, and more.
In addition, Fowler and Lundon recognized those individuals and teams who raised the most funds. Top individual fund-raisers are: fourth place: Larry Buckfire, third place: Daniel Buckfire, second place: Bob Treppa, first place: Cheryl Cole. Walk like MADD top fund-raising teams included: top friends and families teams--second place going to Team Phillip H. Masser; first place to Team MADD for Emmi Lou. The top Corporate Team was Team Buckfire, top law enforcement team was Team Cooper, top academic is Centerline High School SADD.
"We are thrilled with the turnout for the Michigan Walk Like MADD event this year," said Janette Kolodge, MADD Michigan State Office executive director.
"Our community came together in a big way to show their support for MADD's mission, and the funds raised will be put to good use saving lives, serving people and making our roadways safer."
