Immediately after his appointment by the Oakland County Circuit Court to fill out the term of now Secretary of State Ruth Johnson, Oakland County Clerk Bill Bullard Jr. hit the ground running-literally.
In less than 3 months on the job, Bullard visited every local clerk's office--from the county's largest cities and townships, to the smallest villages--61 in all.
On Thursday, March 31, Bullard visited the Bloomfield Township Clerk's Office, and the clerk's offices in the cities of Birmingham and Bloomfield Hills to complete his circuit.
"Our local officials are closest to the people," Bullard explained. "They are on the front lines and best able to hear from citizens how we can better serve. I felt it was important to hear their perspective and to find out what we as a County Clerk's office could to do make their jobs easier."
Oakland County has 61 townships, cities and villages and each has a local clerk who works closely with the County Clerk's office in areas such conducting elections and administering public records.
Orion Township Clerk Penny Shults said that Bullard's visits were the talk of the Michigan Association of Municipal Clerks meeting she recently attended. "Everyone was talking about it, and very impressed. No one had heard of that happening before; and it's so nice to have someone in that position who is genuinely concerned with our challenges on the local level."
Shults praised the efforts of the Oakland County Clerk's staff in helping local clerks in the face of state cutbacks. "Everyone over there is working so hard to help us, and we know we can count on them. It was great to be able to share with Bill Bullard the things we are doing in records retention and to know he and his staff are there for us."
In the course of his visits, Bullard traveled nearly 1,000 miles and met with hundreds of local officials.
Farmington Hills City Clerk Kathy Dornan said, "My thanks to County Clerk Bill Bullard for taking the time to visit every community in Oakland County, including the City of Farmington Hills. That was quite an impressive goal accomplished in a short time. I felt the meeting was positive and productive and appreciate the continued commitment given by Clerk Bullard and his staff in maintaining a good, solid working relationship between the local clerks and the county clerk's office."
