State Bar offers 'Exploring Paralegal Opportunities'

The State Bar of Michigan Paralegal/Legal Assistant Section and the Association of Litigation Support Professionals, Michigan Chapter, will present an "Annual Day of Education: Exploring Paralegal Opportunities" from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, May 6, at Davenport University, 6191 Kraft Avenue, S.E., in Grand Rapids.
The Day of Education will begin with a keynote address on "Therapeutic Jurisprudence" by Professor Cindy Faulkner, of Thomas M. Cooley Law School. Kelly LaGrave, a vice president of the National Association of Legal Assistants, will speak about the benefits of belonging to a national professional organization during the luncheon break.
The rest of the day will feature four seminar tracks:
* Track A focuses on elder law, estate planning and pro bono legal services.
* Track B focuses on medical issues, including the parameters of Michigan's Medical Marihuana Law, medical malpractice, and paralegal compliance.
* Track C focuses on stress management, the power of good leadership, and a primer in medical malpractice for paralegals.
* The ALSP Track focuses on trial technology and advanced demonstratives in the modern courtroom, litigation readiness, and non-linear review.
The cost to attend the Day of Education is $40 for SBM Paralegal/Legal Assistant Section members, $60 for non-members, and $20 for students, if registered before Monday, May 2. All registrations after May 2 are $80. A block of rooms has been reserved at the Courtyard Marriott in downtown Grand Rapids. The group rate is $119 a night, and reservations can be made by calling (616) 242-6000, and referring to group code A0BA0BA.
The Day of Education will be preceded by "The Social Safari," a networking reception from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, May 5, at the Monkey Bar in the lower level of the B.O.B., located at 20 Monroe Ave., N.W. The reception is $15 for those attending the day of education, and $25 for everyone else. The event will feature food, drinks, and a raffle, and attendees are encouraged to wear animal print clothing, tacky tourist outfits, and safari apparel.
