Some Mich. universities boost their housing costs

DETROIT (AP) -- Some Michigan universities are increasing prices for students who live in residence halls as part of an effort to cover increased costs.
The Detroit News reports Eastern Michigan University's board last Thursday approved a 2.1 percent increase to its overall room and board rate for the 2011-2012 academic year and Central Michigan University decided to increase room and board rates by 1.48 percent.
Last Friday, Michigan State University's board increased room and board by 4.95 percent at residence halls. Michigan State says most of the increase is going to cover higher food and utility costs, and the room and board rate is rising less than a year ago. Spartan Village Apartments rates will be unchanged.
The University of Michigan is expected to set room and board rates in May.
