Schuette reports $100M in child support collected

LANSING (AP) -- A special division of the state attorney general's office has collected more than $100 million in previously unpaid child support. Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette said Tuesday the Child Support Division has collected about $103 million and has helped more than 8,800 children. Former Attorney General Mike Cox created the division in 2003 and announced five years later that it had surpassed the $50 million mark in collections. The office was established to go after fathers who can afford to pay child support but choose not to. About 10 percent of the funds collected reimburse families who qualify for assistance during the time they failed to receive child support. Published: Thu, Apr 21, 2011
