The Bicycle-- An Economic Development Tool

On a snowy April 18th, Ingham County Treasurer Eric Schertzing and Lansing Community College President Brent Knight announced the kick-off of an innovative Capital Community Bike Share project. In December 2010, Treasurer Schertzing, an avid bike rider, brought together a work group of community leaders with the goal of creating a Bike Share project and stimulating interest in biking. "Bike Sharing programs are economic development tools - they create great places," said Schertzing. "Cities with Bike Share programs are vibrant, active places. Overwhelming evidence from around the country shows that a Bike Share Program stimulates economic activity in center cities and adds character to a community." At the kick-off event in the Lansing City Hall lobby, Schertzing was joined by Pat Gillespie of the Gillespie Group and representatives of Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero's office. "We are recreating Lansing as a place where people choose to live, work and play. Increasing opportunities for walking and biking are key recommendations in Lansing's new Comprehensive Master Plan. This is an exciting new program - the only one like it this area - and people want the opportunity to bike as a way to explore and appreciate Lansing," Schertzing said. Treasurer Schertzing said that members of the Community Bike Share Committee will solicit community feedback and continue to work on ways to expand bike routes and increase interest in biking in the Lansing area and to make this the best bike program in the nation.
