WCBA's Avalon gardening effort taking place in May, June

The Washtenaw County Bar Association Public Service Committee is again sponsoring Avalon Housing's Gardening with Grace program, aimed at beautifying some of the Avalon properties with flower gardens. In 2010, 164 flats of flowers were planted by Avalon around 23 different sites - with nearly 6,000 individual plants brightening up those local neighborhoods. More than 2,200 pounds of produce also were harvested and used by Avalon residents through those community gardens. Avalon Housing provides permanent affordable and supportive rental housing for Washtenaw County's lowest income households, with a priority for people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, and who have a mental or physical disabilities. "With its housing, Avalon also works to build communities, an important way to help people achieve self-sufficiency. It reduces isolation, fosters peer support and inspires a collective sense of hope," a spokesperson said. The WCBA is recruiting volunteers to again support this program. Judges, magistrates, attorneys, staff and family members are all invited to participate.
